Dear Parent/Carer,

The children have had a fantastic start to this half-term taking part in lots of hands-on activities around the theme of ‘Dinosaurs’. The highlight of the week was a series of Dinosaur workshops followed by a visit from a life-sized, moving baby T-Rex. Thank you to everybody who donated their unwanted clothes to our Recycle2School collection on Monday. As a part of these scheme our school will receive extra funds based on the number of bags received. On Wednesday, our Year 1 and 2 pupils were lucky enough to take part in drama workshops, our Year 5 class visited Whipsnade Zoo to find out more about animals and their habitats and a group of pupils took part in a tennis competition at Dr Triplett’s CofE Primary School. We have a really busy few weeks ahead – please take a look at the diary dates below.

Mr Briggs

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Mr Briggs will be leaving St. Mary’s, at the end of this academic year, due to a promotion to Headship. Mr Briggs has served as our Deputy Headteacher, for the past 4 years, and has made a significant impact to the progress of pupils and the professional development of staff. He has also served as our Religious Education coordinator and his leadership of the RE curriculum and spiritual life of the school were fundamental in helping us to secure our ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted grade. His hard work and dedication will be sorely missed by both pupils and staff. I’m sure you will join us in wishing him all the best for the future.

Test Week

Throughout next week each class (excluding EYs, Years 2 and 6) will be taking various age/ability appropriate tests. These results will be used to set targets and any support needed to achieve these. The results will also be included on the Annual Pupil Progress Reports.

Sweet Cups

Tomorrow, every child will be bringing home an empty cup and they have been asked to try to fill it with sweets, small toys or stationary items (to be used on our ‘Sweet Cup Children’s Tombola’). On Friday 15th June pupils may wear their own clothes to school in return from bringing in a filled cup.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Throughout next week, Year 1 pupils will be taking the government’s statutory Phonics Screening Check intended to show how well children can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify students who need extra phonics help. The Department for Education defines the checks as “short, light-touch assessments” that take about four to nine minutes to complete. The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher. Non-words (or nonsense words, or pseudo words) are a collection of letters that will follow phonics rules your child has been taught, but don’t mean anything – your child will need to read these with the correct sounds to show that they understand the phonics rules behind them.

PTA Team Update

Good bye Sue……

Our PTA Secretary,

Sue Serret who was

elected in 2016 is

reluctantly standing

down at the end of

this school year.

She has worked very hard on the team to fulfil our motto ‘a community not a committee’. Many of you will know her for being very at ease holding a microphone in her hand - compere extraordinaire! At the Bingo Night, Race Night and Fetes where her talents came to the fore!

We all wish her the very best in her paid role working for Trinity Homeless Charity. Sue will be heading the team in organising the Big Sleep Out 2018. Find out more, http://www.wearetrinity.org.uk/

PTA AGM Elections

We need to elect a core team ……

Sue’s post of Secretary is an elected post, therefore we need to replace her at our AGM on 16th July 2018 at 8pm - the Beefeater, Premier Inn, Uxbridge.

St Mary’s PTA cannot exist without electing a new Chair, Treasurer and Secretary on an annual basis. Please send your application for one of these posts to Miss Shevlin by Wednesday 11th July at 3.30pm.

In addition, it would be lovely to have a Vice Chair, Vice Treasurer, Class Rep. Co-ordinator and Event promotion Co-ordinator to support the team.

Summer Fete Update please help

  • Can someone loan us a small counter-top freezer from Thursday 21st June until after the fete on Saturday afternoon?
  • Bring outgrown school uniform to the school w/c Monday 18th June
  • Donate all your unwanted nearly-new cuddly toys to the school w/c Monday 18th June
  • Home made cakes please, especially chocolate!, bring to the school Friday 21st June
  • Full Throttle Wrestling, a huge hit last year, they are back! We need 5 men (or women) to put up the ring on the morning of the fete at 9am, please get in touch asap
  • Gazebos, do you have one? Can we use it for the fete?
  • We will not be having a book, DVD or toy stall this year, no need to save these items

£500 donation!!

A huge thank you to Sophie’s (Y6) Dad, who has secured this donation from his company, O’Halloran and O’Brien.

This demonstrates the importance of personal connections with a business. The PTA regularly write to many companies for support, largely without success. Therefore, please help us by being pro-active with your employer. They can only say ‘no’.
