Phonics Teaching

All pupils in Early Years and Year 1 are taught phonics and how to blend sounds when reading according to the Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme. Pupils are taught in small groups according to their knowledge of the phonics sounds and their ability to read words using blending. We also have a RWI Catch-up programme for pupils in Year 2 who did not meet the government's Phonics Screening Check expected standard. Please click here to be taken to the RWI Parents Page. This includes useful resources for parents including guidance on how to pronounce the individual phonics sounds.

Reading Schemes

Once pupils can blend sounds and they are able to read simple words, they are given a book to bring home from the Oxford Reading Tree scheme. All pupils from Year 1 upwards are expected to read at least three pages a night and we ask that parents hear their child read on a daily basis and sign their Reading Record. Please click here for more details about the Oxford Reading Tree scheme.

Mathematics

All teachers plan their daily lessons according to the programmes of study listed in the government's latest National Curriculum - please click here for details.
