Catholic Life of the School

Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Michael

St. Mary's Catholic Primary School has very close links with our local parish church Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Michael. Fr. Nicholas, our parish priest, comes into school each week to meet the children and staff. The children take part in liturgical celebrations in the church and also annually have a Christmas Carol Service in the church led by our Year Six children.

R.E Curriculum

As a Catholic school, religion is not just another subject in the curriculum, but it is a way of life.  It permeates all relationships and activities.

At. St. Mary’s we follow ‘The way, the Truth and the Life’ programme of study as the basis for our Religious Education teaching. It begins in Lower Early years and goes through to Year 6. It is broken into 6 units across the year. The units are developmental, building on previous knowledge and experience and taking into account of the children’s age and understanding. This programme aims to encourage children’s awareness of the presence of God and to help them respond to that presence. The scheme helps to enable children learn about the Catholic faith and respond to its invitation with growing faith and love.

Other Faiths

Respect for the traditions and beliefs of other faiths are important in a multicultural community such as St. Mary's Catholic Primary School. Each class from Nursery to Year 6 is taught about Judaism every year as well learning about another major world religion, e.g. Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam. When children learn about other faiths they : visits to places of worship, do workshop lead by guest speakers and a range of cross curricular work.
